Do you end up with a horrible attitude when you are stressed? Do people steer away from you when this happens? How is this going to help your team if no one wants to be around you?
Too often we let our stress level dictate our attitude. We need to turn that around. Keep a positive attitude and your stress level will stay under control. Most things that people stress over they do not have any control over. You need to concentrate on the things that you do have control over. Use these areas to keep your stress level down.
You should be aware of things that may come up that may change your plans. If you are planning an outdoor party and you can see ahead of time that the weather forecast is calling for rain, then you need to plan accordingly. If you decide to “take a chance” that the rain will not come and do not have a back up plan, then you need to be ready to get wet. It is that simple. Does that cause you stress? Could have you affected that by your attitude going in?
Part of having a positive attitude is having the confidence that you are prepared for what life has in store for you. Are you as organized as much as you need to be? Have you trained your staff to the level that they need to be at? Bad things are going to happen to everyone. It is how you handle these adversities that dictate what kind of a person that you are or what kind of a company you run.
I have worked in restaurant management my whole career. Not every customer is going to be completely satisfied with what they were served. If I changed my attitude every time that someone had a concern, I would have too much stress. Accept the fact that you will have to deal with someone that is having a bad day and they will share that feeling with anyone that does not fully meet their demands.
Keep your positive attitude and use your expertise to take care of the customer’s needs. Do not take it personal, but use it as a way to showcase how strong you are in customer service. It all starts with your attitude. You can take a potential stressful situation and turn it into a positive experience for your customer.
