This comes from the concept of “Take your kid to work day”. If you took your kid to work, you would want everything that they experience that day to be a great impression of your company and your particular job.
Would you act differently because your kid was there with you? Would you change the language that you use and make sure that it was kid friendly? Would you treat your co-workers differently that day? You should not have to. Last week I shared a verse that talked about working for God instead of for other people. The same concept is also in the following verse.
Colossians 3:23
New Living Translation (NLT)
Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.
You should take God to work with you everyday. Think about your style of management. Would you be proud to show it off to God everyday. I have had conversations with co-workers about whether or not you can practice at work the concepts that you study and believe in on Sundays while at church. Some people do not feel that you can be completely honest at work and get ahead in a company. Others feel that being disrespectful and even cursing at your staff is what is needed to get the job done at times.
What would God think about that if He was in the room with you. Guess what. He is there with you. God is everywhere and witnesses everything that we do. He would not approve of some of these behaviors. If you are always aware of His presence, it truly changes your approach to leadership. I have sat in meetings where I was embarrassed how the leader of the group treated their team. I am not saying that you cannot demand high standards. It is how you go about getting those results that is sometimes unacceptable. You should always treat people with respect.
We need to be more aware of how we are treating others at work. Sometimes there is too much competition to get ahead and get the next promotion that we degrade those around us in an effort to make ourselves look better. If we concentrate on making the whole team look good, it will reflect on us as well. The key is to treat others as you would want to be treated yourself.
Take God to work with you today and let me know how your approach changed afterwards.
