We continue in our discussion about the fruit of the Spirit.  Peace is the third and final characteristic of our inward state mentioned in these verses.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23

We typically think of peace as the absence of troubles or turmoil.   The peace in this passage means quietness or rest.  This peace comes from the inside.  It is not based on our outward circumstances, but instead comes from the Holy Spirit living within us.  It is an inward emotion, an inward peace.

You might say that peace is calmness, a lack of worry, and inner contentment.  I experience it as a product of having confidence in what God has in store for me.  It is a gift from God that we receive through the Holy Spirit.  The world, regardless of our surroundings, cannot take it away.

In Philippians, we learn the apostle Paul, locked in a depressing prison cell, wrote, “I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content.” He reminded his readers that they also could have “God’s peace, which is far beyond human understanding.” You too can have this unique contentment and peace!

We used to hear of someone being a nervous wreck or suffering a nervous breakdown. Emotions haven’t changed, but how we describe them has. Tension, anxiety, depression, and panic attacks are the common designations today.  Finding peace in a contentious world can seem hopeless, but Scripture tells us to “seek peace and pursue it” (1 Peter 3:11).

To experience peace, you must take responsibility for your thoughts. Have trust in God’s will…what he has in store for us…and what storms we may face along the way.  He will carry us through them.  With God’s help you can quit reacting with anger or self-pity. It is not your circumstances or other people that determine your mood; it is your attitude about them.  We applied the same concept in pursuing joy in your life.  These verses sum it up.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.  Philippians 4:6-7

Think about the times you may be anxious, frustrated or your life is in chaos. The world may seem to be spinning out of control, and you just need a moment to sit and be still. The overwhelming peace that can comfort you during this time comes from the Holy Spirit within us.

Peace is knowing that our God is in control.
