“So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say? I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it. It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built. But anyone who hears and doesn’t obey is like a person who builds a house right on the ground, without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins.” Luke 2:46-49
Why would anyone build a house without a strong foundation? Could it be because they don’t want to invest the time and effort to dig down to solid rock? It may be choosing to live on the beach but ignoring the need for recommended hurricane protection/shutters, supports, whatever they do to safeguard homes. I think that shows a lack of preparation for the future…our eternal future. Jesus compared our belief and actions to the foundation of a house.
We can’t cut corners when following God. When He gives us direction, which He always does, we must obey. We must put into practice His teachings. The more committed we are to our relationship with God, and the more we practice His principles, the better prepared we are to handle what life throws our way. Our trust and belief in God are the foundation of our life, demonstrated every day in the things we say and do. If we stand strong on these principles, we can weather the temptations put in front of us without being tempted to give in to them.
If you are a part-time Christian who goes to church regularly, but does not practice Godly principles during the week, you will be held accountable. Jesus exposed those who said religious things but did not have a personal relationship with Him. Many think if they are “a good person” and say religious things, they will have eternal life. However, it is only through faith in Jesus Christ that you will receive eternal life with Him.
Most people do not purposely build their lives on an inferior foundation. They are not intentionally rejecting Jesus’ principles; they are just careless in their approach. They don’t think about where they’re going and the consequences of their actions. When the temptations of life result in poor decisions, everything that has been built up to that time can be swept away and one must start over. It may be time to evaluate where you are in building your foundation.
Do you need to give yourself up to God and start a new life, a new foundation in Him? Do you need to repair the foundation you have because it has cracks? God knows your heart and the strength of your foundation. Make sure it is solid.
