People pray in many ways. Some pray like they are reading a laundry list of wants and needs. Some pray the same prayer all the time until it is just like set of words. Others pray as though they are talking to a friend. One thing to keep in mind is to pray with supplication.
Supplication is not a word that we use every day, but it is mentioned in Bible verses. Supplication is commonly defined as “The action of asking or begging for something earnestly or humbly.” We take from this that we need to be humble. The word supplication can be tied also back to the root, supple. The fact that the word supplication has supple as its root gives us a lot of insight as to what it means to pray with supplication.
In Psalm 51, when David confessed his sin to God, he prayed that God would not only forgive him, but would create in him a clean heart and a renewed spirit. David did not just want God to meet his needs (although that was part of his prayer); he wanted God to change him so completely that his desires became in line with those of God.
We should be praying, not only for our requests, but also to be humble and become supple before God. Our minds should be soft and pliable. This allows Him to mold our thinking, emotions to be in alignment with His thinking and emotions.
Let’s look at Psalms 37:4-5 where we are told: “Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.” I used to think that if I had a strong relationship with God, He would give me what I asked for. Boy was I wrong. If I pray with supplication and am supple in my thinking, I will delight in what He desires. We want to be more Christ like. Let us pray to be able to think more like God and to trust what He has in store for us.
