Have you had a mentor in your life? You probably thought back in your career and remembered someone that took you under their wings on your first job. It could be a friend or teacher at school that helped you through some tough classes. It is probably mostly work related in an older person teaching a younger person in the ways of the business world or whatever career path you have taken.
Mentoring does not have to be a formal thing. It is not only about sharing knowledge and experience. It is more about a relationship. Are you going to listen to advise from a stranger more than someone that you have a relationship with? More than likely, no. We feel more comfortable around people that we know. We will ask more questions and listen more to the answers.
I am utilizing mentors at work more and more as the years go on. You would think that I would be the mentor with my experience. I do a lot of that, but if I need to increase my computer skills, the next generation has so much more talent than myself. I can learn so much. Do not just assume that a mentoring relationship is while the elders are teaching the younger generation.
Now, I want you to look at your personal life. Who has given you guidance and love in your life? It may be your parents, close friends, classmates or coworkers. They may be the ones that have helped you through difficult times or brought you back into reality when you got too big for your britches. They probably used Christian traits to do this. They were a Christian mentor.
We should strive to mentors for Christ. The best way that we can do this is to live our lives as Christ like as possible. As we are examples to others, they will look to us and be curious as to how we are the way that we are. I have gone through a lot of ups and downs in my life, but I have always bounced back with a positive attitude and keep coming back with a stronger faith and more blessings. I have a coworker that has commented to me that she has never seen anyone end up with so many blessings out of tough situations.
It is amazing what a strong faith can do in your life. I am so blessed that I want to share my story with others. I do not go around telling everyone about it, but if the opportunity arises that I can mentor my Christian faith to someone that needs it in their life, I will do it. You do not have to be forceful in your approach, just available. I want others to be as blessed as I am by having a relationship with Jesus Christ.
The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. 2 Timothy 2:2 This is referring to the teachings of Paul and the passing down of the faith. We have learned about God and developed our faith due to the actions of others in our lives. We need to pass on the spiritual gift of a relationship with God to others so that they can experience the same thing in their lives. Strive to be a spiritual mentor. You may be what is missing in someone’s life.
